Accomplished singer, songwriter and producer, Julia Messenger will release her first ever Live Album. The official Melbourne release comes at the end of her successful tour of France and Germany this year, where she has come home with more new songs, rave reviews of performances in Europe and an interview on jazz-online.com.
Beloved by fans internationally for her sultry vocals and having been coined the "Queen of Chill" as well as a "world class performer" by press in the U.S., Julia has taken a new direction on this album on two fronts as it marks her first ever Jazz album, as well as her first Live album to date.
Of the 13 songs on the album, her song "Talk to Me" is heartfelt and intimate, whereas "Goodbye My Lover" and "Forbidden Fruit" express the cheekier side to her songwriting. "Telepathy" and "Soul of Suspicion" are songs that hint to her electronic past whilst excuted on this CD superbly in the style of Jazz.
On the other end of the spectrum "Padam Padam" is a tribute to Edith Piaf, whereas "Surabaya Johnny" expresses her love of musical theatre and the great songwriting of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. The intimacy of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" as opposed to the soul expressed in "Feeling Good," is just a small indication of the diversity of what Julia Messenger gets up to at a live performance!
One review from a German Newspaper in September 2011 sums up a concert nicely:
‘Julia Messenger is a happening act to follow...(At the Jazzkeller Krefeld Germany) … we heard a voice destined for big things....The diminutive singer has a voice powerful enough to be on a level with the best soul singers, both black and white.
Her tone nevertheless remained svelte and lucid, and with sophistication and restrained rasping she showed in her phrasing a distinct similarity to Julia Driscoll. She consistently used her voice with great assuredness – sometimes it was very expressive, sometimes coquettishly shy, and while the tempo remained moderate her singing was full of emotion with a gospel style.
…the genre of Jazz is something that Julia Messenger masters superbly.’
